The UK photocard driving licence is one of the most widely held identity documents in Britain, which makes it a natural fallback when an applicant has no passport. It has no chip or machine-readable zone, so verifying it well is about reading the card accurately, checking it against what a genuine UK licence should look like, and proving the person holding it is the person on it.

Frequently asked questions
- Does the UK driving licence have a chip or MRZ to read?
- No. Unlike a passport, the UK photocard driving licence has no NFC chip and no machine-readable zone. Verification therefore rests on reading and checking the printed photocard — its fields, layout and security features — and on binding the photo to the live holder with face match and liveness, rather than on a chip.
- How does Zanyara check a UK driving licence is genuine?
- Zanyara extracts the photocard fields with trained OCR, checks them for internal consistency (for example that the encoded driver number agrees with the name and date of birth), and assesses the document against the expected UK template. It then compares the licence photo to a live selfie with liveness, so a genuine card can’t simply be presented by someone else.

- No — they answer different questions. DVLA’s own online service confirms driving entitlements and penalty points from a share code the driver generates.
