What identity verification actually costs per check

“How much does it cost per verification?” is the first question every buyer asks and the hardest to get a straight answer to. Here’s a vendor-neutral benchmark of the market, the factors that move the number, and the fees that don’t show up in the headline rate.

The market range

Across published 2025–2026 pricing analyses, a single identity verification costs roughly $0.50 to $7.00, depending on the check, your volume and the pricing model. Broadly:

  • Transparent, self-serve providers — often around $1.35–$1.50 per check (e.g. Sumsub, Stripe Identity are reported near this band).
  • Enterprise, sales-led vendors — Jumio is commonly reported around $3–$5, and Onfido (now Entrust IDV) around $2–$5, on custom contracts.
  • Contract minimums — several large vendors’ deals reportedly start in the tens of thousands per year, so the effective per-check cost at low volume can be much higher.

Treat all of these as ranges, not quotes — real pricing depends on volume, geography and mix, and most enterprise rates are contract-specific.

What actually drives the price

Check composition

Document-only is cheapest; adding biometrics, liveness, NFC and AML screening each adds cost.

Attempts & retries

Per-attempt billing vs per-successful-verification changes effective cost dramatically.

Volume tiers

Unit price usually falls with committed volume — but committing has its own risk.

Geography & documents

Some regions and document types cost more to verify.

Human review

Manual adjudication is a real per-decision cost where flows need it.

Minimums & platform fees

Annual commitments and per-tenant fees reshape the math at low volume.

How to compare fairly

Don’t compare headline rates — compare cost per successful verification for your check mix and pass rate, including attempt fees and any minimum. Ask every vendor for: the per-check rate at your volume, whether failed attempts are billed, what’s bundled vs added, and the annual minimum. A provider that answers those plainly is telling you something useful before you’ve signed anything.

Frequently asked questions

How much does identity verification cost per check?
Published 2025–2026 analyses put the market range at roughly $0.50 to $7.00 per verification. Transparent, self-serve providers tend to sit at the lower end (around $1.35–$1.50), while enterprise, sales-led vendors such as Jumio and Onfido/Entrust are commonly reported in the ~$2–$5 range on custom contracts.
Why is IDV pricing so hard to find?
Several of the largest vendors run sales-led enterprise contracts — often starting in the tens of thousands per year — and don’t publish per-verification rates. That makes apples-to-apples comparison hard, which is exactly why per-check transparency matters.
What’s the biggest hidden cost?
Usually failed and repeated attempts. If you’re billed every time an applicant retries or a check can’t complete, your effective cost per successful verification can be far higher than the headline rate — especially with strict flows or poor capture UX.
